Spring Parade Association Home Honors a Hero

By Olan Beam

buck hornHBA Members Unite to Build Buck Horn Tribute Home. Buck Horn, a general contractor and owner of Buck Horn Construction, was a larger than life character – an outdoorsman, entrepreneur and outstanding builder who continually wore a smile on his face and a hat on his head. In November, 2011, Buck began a battle for his life against leukemia. He fought hard, kept the faith, surprised many with his courage and strength, and seemingly never ending humor, but in the end those who loved him suffered great loss – the loss of a loving husband and father, son, brother, uncle, friend.

The legacy that Buck has left behind is one of giving. He always gave back to others – to his community, his subs, his customers, his family. Buck always gave his all. “His subcontractors knew when they were going through a tough stretch, he would figure out a way to help them,” explained Rich Achor, president of Arena Builders. Jerry Herman, executive vice president of Home Builders Association of Winston-Salem, agreed, “when the HBA asked for contractors to build a Parade Association Home, Buck Horn was the first to raise his hand.”

Home Builders Association of Winston-Salem (HBAWS) along with two past presidents, Rich Achor and Steve Hurst, and many subcontractors have united to complete the home Buck Horn started before his untimely death in 2011. This team of home builders have joined together with one purpose – to help Buck’s wife, Nikki complete this tribute home in his honor. All proceeds from the sale will go to Nikki to help provide financially for the family of an HBA Hero – Buck Horn. The Tribute Home, built in the Lake at Lissara development, is one of two Spring Parade Association featured in the association’s 2012 Spring Parade of Homes

Association House

The home is a mountain lodge-inspired retreat of cedar and stone overlooking the Lodge and Lake, with Pilot Mountain as a backdrop. The interior welcomes visitors with an expansive great room and kitchen combination featuring a natural stone range hood on one side and chalet-style windows on the other. As is typical in Buck Horn homes, visitors will be intrigued by fun, unique features throughout, especially the hidden door from the first floor office to the powder room. This home provides both indoor and outdoor entertainment areas including a covered outdoor living space with fireplace looking out over the lake.

Buck always found time for his family – wife, Nikki, and their four children, Amanda, Caleb, Carly & Hunter – even with all the challenges a general contractor faces. “Buck always had time for us,” said Nikki. “On the spur of the moment, we’d load up the kids and take off on some adventure with the cell phone ringing!” Buck had the uncanny ability to strike the right balance in life with regards to work and family. He enjoyed making dream homes become realities for his customers. “Buck loved helping his customers create the home they really wanted – not just a showplace, but a home where each feature and detail is combined perfectly to make everyday living a treat,” explained Nikki. “If you can dream it, we can build it,” that is a saying that Buck believed and a truth he lived by.

Experience for yourself the lasting legacy to Buck Horn at Lake at Lissara (Lewisville, NC) during the Spring Parade of Homes (www.springparadeofhomesws.com).
